The challenges of mental illness and substance abuse are a part of daily life for approximately 20 percent of Americans. The stigmatization and discrimination associated with both mental illness as well as co-morbid conditions contribute to the economic poverty and social isolation of many citizens. JBA has provided research expertise and assistance on multiple projects that address the issues of stigma, adherence to recovery programs, and co-morbidity involving mental illness, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. For example, JBA has evaluated the implementation of an anti-stigma campaign designed to promote the community integration of persons with mental disabilities, a project in line with the President's New Freedom Initiative. This campaign was implemented on a national level under the auspices of the Ad Council.
