Mental Health & Substance Abuse
The challenges of mental illness and substance abuse are a part of daily life for approximately 20 percent of Americans. The stigmatization and discrimination associated with both mental illness as well as co-morbid conditions contribute to the economic poverty and social isolation of many citizens. JBA has provided research expertise and assistance on multiple projects that address the issues of stigma; adherence to recovery programs; and co-morbidity involving mental illness, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. For example, JBA has evaluated the implementation of an anti-stigma campaign designed to promote the community integration of persons with mental disabilities, a project in line with the President's New Freedom Initiative. This campaign was implemented on a national level under the auspices of the Ad Council.
