When children are prenatally exposed to alcohol or other drugs, proper care can help offset the effects of the exposure on their brains, bodies, and development. Connecting families to the information and support they need to help provide this care can reduce daily stressors and potentially keep them out of the child welfare system.

This project seeks to understand the experiences of children and families seeking community services and supports after a diagnosis related to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Areas of emphasis include access, availability, and efficacy. It builds on previous projects completed to establish the scope of the problem and lay the groundwork for improved care and to identify evidence-informed resources and opportunities to help stakeholders identify, care for, and treat affected children.

First-year project activities include—

  • Conducting a literature review and multiple community scans to refine research questions and identify participants to engage in an upcoming study
  • Creating a suitable study design and submitting an OMB package, if needed
