Like many caregivers, young student parents face challenges accessing consistent, reliable childcare.
This brief examines the childcare experiences of participants in the Generation Hope Scholars Program in the Washington, DC, region. Findings are compared against national research on student parents, when available.
Scholars reported using multiple types of childcare, including family care, parent care only, and center-based care. Despite this, many participants said they needed to take time off from school due to challenges with childcare. Other barriers included the prohibitive cost of high-quality childcare and limited options during nontraditional hours.
The authors conclude with recommendations for institutes of higher education, researchers, and policymakers wishing to support young student parents. A report on study findings beyond childcare needs is also available.
